Art Joe (b. 1952)

Art Joe was born at Aishihik to parents Jenny Isaac and Jimmy Joe. He went to the Catholic Lower Post Mission School when he was five or six where he spent ten years before he was transferred to the Coudert Indian Residential School in Whitehorse for another two years. He started drawing when he was in Lower Post and he created the stage backdrop for the yearly Christmas play. He became serious about his art in the 1980s and since then his art is in many private and institutional collections in the Yukon. He carves, paints, and writes, and many of his pieces are autobiographical.1)
