Elie Felix Joyal (1887 – 1918)

Elie Felix Joyal was born in Merrill, Wisconsin. He was a miner at Bear Creek, near Dawson in 1918 when he was drafted to serve in the First World War. In July he was posted to No. 3 Company of the 2nd Depot Battalion, British Columbia Regiment and then transferred to the Canadian Railway Troops as reinforcement. He died of influenza in October in Vancouver where he was still training for overseas duty. Private Joyal is buried in the Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver, British Columbia. Mount Joyal near the NWT border was named in his honour in June 1973.1)
