Frederick John Johnson (b.1881)

Fred Johnson was born in England.1) He staked discovery claim on Johnson Creek, a trib. of the McQuesten River, in 1898. About thirty-eight men stampeded in the fall and stayed there for the winter but high water in the shafts discouraged them. Johnson was still mining the ground in 1915 and recovered a reported 47.5 ounces that year.2) He enlisted for service in the First World War in June 1916.3) He was recruited by Captain George Black and was in England in August 1917. 4) He remained in active service in 1917-18.5) Johnson returned to the Mayo area after the war and mined on Haggart Creek into the 1940s.6)
