Rosie Johnston (b. 1908)
Rosie Johnston was a Tlingit Elder of the Frog Clan. As a youth, she lost her eye in a dogsledding accident. She spent much of her time in the bush and was skilled in hunting, trapping, and tanning hides and was knowledgeable about Yukon plants their use in natural healing. At age 82, she was still trapping by snowshoes and tanning hides. She was well-known for her hand sewing and beadwork and her beaded vests were worn at special dances and events. She loved to travel and in 1974, when she and her husband David were chosen as Mr. and Mrs. Yukon, they made a trip to Hawaii. She remembered when a boat trip from Teslin to Whitehorse took five days by boat. 1)
