Peggy Kormendy (1937 – 2023)
Peggy Kormendy was the first female chief of the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in and signed the First Nation’s final agreement in 1988. Peggy was an outspoken advocate for the protection of the environment and urged the government to protect the Peel Watershed region when the land use plan for the area was in question. Peggy was a champion fisher on the Yukon River and friends and family tell of the time she pulled an 84-pound salmon from her net. Geraldine Van Bibber described Peggy Kormendy as one who ensured the old ways were not forgotten while adapting to changing times.1)
