Harry Lowry (1941 – 2019)
Harry Lowry was born in Kingston, Ontario to Flossie and Loyd Lowry. He received his heavy-duty mechanic’s licence in 1959 and travelled west to work a variety of jobs. He became an expert in high pressure air systems and the repair and maintenance of compressors. He became a commercial diver in 1964. Harry and Claudia married in 1967 and they lived in Vancouver before moving to Whitehorse in 1968. In 1974, Harry obtained his certificate as an instructor of scuba diving and in 1997 he worked with Al Jacobs and George Privett to establish the Yukon Underwater Diving Association. He was the Yukon representative for the Association of Canadian Underwater Councils from 1982 to 1986 and set up Isosceles Enterprises to sell and maintain scuba equipment.1)
Harry worked for more than a decade at the Whitehorse Copper Mine and then helped to dismantle the mine after it closed in 1982. From 1972 to 1982 he was an active member of the Mine Rescue and First Aid teams. He received recognition for ten years of volunteer work as a Whitehorse volunteer fire fighter in 2001 and received the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002 for his significant contribution to the community.2)
Harry became well-known as the master of the tourist boats MV Anna Maria and the MV Schwatka. He was a member of the Yukon Transportation Museum from the beginning and served several terms as president. He was heavily involved in the restoration of the museum’s DC3.3)
