James P. Light

James Light lived in Chicago before he came to the Yukon. He owned several valuable claims in the Klondike, including Claim No. 15 Below Discovery on Sulphur Creek. Light was an early staker during a stampede to the creek and he refused an offer of $70,000 for his claim. On his way down the Yukon River, Light took soundings with an idea to establish a steamship line from Seattle to the Yukon. Light reached Seattle on 11 September 1897 bringing gold from his mining claims and deals. He contracted Moran Bros. Shipyard to build three river steamers for the Seattle and Yukon Steamship Co. and Robert Moran signed the contract in Chicago. The steamship company was a group of Chicago, Boston, and other eastern citizens. The steamers were named the J. P. Light, F. K. Gustin (after a well-known Chicago attorney), and the D. R. Campbell.1)
