Andrew Madden
George Carmack gave credit to Andrew Madden for finding the first gold on the Klondike River in 1889. However, Madden was not the first to prospect and find some gold in the Klondike. In 1886, Joe Ladue, Dan Sprague, and John and Pete Nelson travelled down the river panning but not finding gold in any significant amount. Madden's Bar in the Fortymile River district was named after Andrew Madden.1) In the spring and summer of 1887, Frank Buteau was located on Bonanza Bar in the Fortymile River about halfway between Franklin’s bar and Madden’s Bar, at the foot of a riffle a half mile above Canyon Creek.2)
