Charles Daniel Macaulay
The office of police magistrate was established in Dawson City and in Whitehorse in the spring of 1901. The Dawson Police Magistrate, C. A. Macaulay, was elevated to the territorial bench in 1902.1) Justice Charles Macaulay was the recognized police magistrate and when he was out of the territory in 1907, the police had to do the magisterial work of the city as there was only one other judge in the territory.2) The population of the Yukon declined so that in the spring of 1912, the territorial bench returned to its original stature. Dugas and Craig were persuaded to retire, and Macaulay continued to act as both territorial judge and police magistrate.3) Charles Macaulay was a judge in Dawson City for over forty years starting in 1902.
