Clayton Levin “Clay” Martin (1938 - 2014)

Clay Martin was born in the Fort St. John area of British Columbia. He was raised on the family farm in Montney, BC with brothers John and Gordon. In the early 1960s, Clay became a big game guide for well-known outfitters Gary Powell, Red Sorenson, and Skook Davidson. Clay joined his brother Gordon in the Yukon to work on the Alaska Highway and then Dempster Highway construction projects. In 1972, Clay and Gordon bought the Pelly Mountain Outfitters big game concession from outfitter Curly DesRosiers, and Clay operated the concession successfully for many years. He had forty-six head of horses on winter ranges in the area with mid-summer roundups at Horse Camp on the Mayo Road. In 1973, Clay married Bonnie Kirkpatrick and son Chance was born in 1975. In the off-season, Clay worked at the Whitehorse Copper mine and drove truck in the northern British Columbian logging and oil patch industries. In 1980, he and partner Katie Ostrom built their home on the old White Pass horse ranch at Horse Creek.1)
