George F. Mayhood (1858 – 1918)
George Mayhood was born near Napanee, Ontario and moved to California in 1875. He travelled to Dawson in 1898 and survived the avalanche at Sheep Camp on the Chilkoot Pass that killed sixty men. He was part of the provisioning firm, Mayhood and Jackson in Dawson and then followed the rush to Fairbanks, Alaska. He started a general store at Chatanika, on Cleary Creek near Fairbanks. He moved to Iditerod and then to Ruby where he had a cigar store and pool room. He was travelling south to San Francisco to see his two sons, and was drowned when the Princess Sophia sank in the Lynn Canal. He was retiring to live comfortably in the south.1)
