Isaac Mallette (1863 – 1939)
Isaac Mallette was born in Hull, Quebec. In 1896, he arrived in the Fortymile River district with a party of some 30 prospectors. He mined in the Dawson area for years and relocated to Mayo around 1905.1) He and partner Narcisse “Fred” Lefebvre mined on Secret Creek in the Mayo district from around 1911 to 1930. The men were also partners in Lefebvre’s sawmill in Mayo. In the 1930s, Mallette worked as a janitor in the Mayo school. He owned and rented out a cabin in town and lived in a frame house in the alley. He grew a garden, created an overhead watering system for it, and was known for his homemade sauerkraut.2) A Whitehorse newspaper called him a well-known Mayo character.3)
