John Robert Maltby (1853 – 1903)

John Maltby was born in Bathurst, New Brunswick. He married Annie Maria Hanson in 1882. She was a teacher in Newcastle, New Brunswick. John Maltby was an attorney in Newcastle in the early 1880s and was active in the Anglican church. John and Annie moved to Brandon, Manitoba in 1883 where their two sons were born. John moved to Juneau before settling in Dawson in 1898. He was a founding member of the Arctic brotherhood. Annie and his sons joined him in 1900. Maltby worked as an accountant and bookkeeper for the lumber and milling department of the Ladue Company. He retired in 1903 with failing health and died of tuberculosis of the brain and middle ear. His brothers Frank and Edward also lived in Dawson, and Edward was living with the family with John died. Annie spent several winters in La Jolla, California after his death and she died in Skagway of heart disease in 1910.1)
