John Mellish (d. 1941)
John Mellish and a party of coal miners left the Nanaimo mines and arrived in the Yukon in 1897. He tried placer mining and then returned to coal mining and became an outstanding miner in the Yukon. The Whitehorse newspaper referred to him as one of the best loved sourdoughs of the north. He died at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver.1)
