Meje
Meje, was a well-known nedet'e prophet or dreamer. He lived in the Pelly Banks area and was well known in the southern Yukon and northern British Columbia. Meje was Amos Dick’s grandfather and was Lena Charlie's mother's father. Meji had two daughters in Ross River, T'age Ma, Lena's aunt, and Masia, Maggie Dick. Lena Charlie's mother heard Meji say that “when all my grandchildren are gone finally this land will be no more.” When powerful elders are eating, children are not allowed to run behind them. A person who can swallow a spirit is called dene nedahdehi. Meje would go without food during the day. He would get up early and eat but then nothing all day to eat or drink so he wouldn't swallow people's spirits.1)
