Robert Charles Maier (b. 1945)
Charles Maier was born in British Columbia. He graduated with a BA from the University of British Columbia (1969), an MA from the University of London, King’s College (1970) and a PhD from King’s College. In 1975, he was an information and education officer with B.C.’s Historic Parks System. He was the Government Records Archivist at Yukon Archives between 1981 and 1988. During that time, he taught at Yukon College as their first history professor. He moved to Ottawa and became the Athabaska Herald in the Governor General’s office. He was a reservist and served as the founding Commanding Officer of a francophone Army Cadet Corps at Casselman, Ontario. He joined the Heraldry Society of Canadian 1972 and became a Fellow of the Royal Heraldry Society of Canada in 1995. In 2002, he was appointed Chief of Ceremonial and Protocol for the federal government. Maier retired from the public service in 2006. He has taught at a number of colleges and schools and was teaching at the Royal Military College in 2020.1)
