Robert Morton (1878 – 1918)

Robert Morton was born in Newcastle-on-Tyne, England. He joined the North-West Mounted Police in February 1899 and was posted to Dawson. He was discharged in 1902 and remained in the Yukon working as a miner. Newton enlisted in the First World War in in 1914. He joined the Boyle detachment in Vancouver and transferred to the Eaton Machine Gun Battery in England. He was promoted to acting sergeant in February 1916 and commissioned as a temporary lieutenant in February 1918. He re-joined the 29th Battalion in April and was wounded in August during the Battle of Amiens. He was evacuated to England where he died. Robert Morton was the last Yukoner killed during the war. He was awarded the British War Medal and the Allied Victory Medal.1)
