Robert “Bob” Mulvain

Robert Mulvain installed the Mulvain Dredge (Holbrook Dredge or also Mulvane Dredge) on Walker Fork in the winter of 1907-08. It operated successfully from 1908 to 1912 when it was dismantled and taken to the Sixtymile district. Mulvain probably moved Russell King’s Fortymile dredge in the winter of 1909. King constructed the dredge in 1907, and it started work above the mouth of Walker Fork on the Fortymile River. It worked there from 1907 to 1909 when Mulvain moved it to the mouth of Uhler Creek on the South Fork of the Fortymile. It worked upstream from there to Franklin Creek. It was working a short distance upstream from Franklin during the 1917 season and was not operated at that site after 1917. Mulvain was the manager of the dredge company until the outbreak of the First World War. The Dawson Daily News newspaper reported that Mulvain had a commission in the British Army in 1915, was promoted to rank of major, and was digging trenches in Surrey.1)
