David Walker McLeod (b. 1872)

David Walker McLeod was born in Scotland. He was a Dawson ship rigger when he enlisted for service in the First World War in October 1916.1) He omitted to apply before leaving Dawson but his claim, No 1 Above on Little Gold Creek, should have been free from cancellation until six months after the final termination of war. The Mining Recorder refused to let Fred Hurst relocate to the claim as everyone on the creek knew that McLeod was at war. McLeod thought his claim would hold good until it was due for renewal on 5 May 1918.The renewal grant was actually due on 5 May 1917. The ground was worked continuously in the summer of 1916 and there was sufficient work to entitle McLeod to a renewal. The Gold Commissioner wrote a letter to support McLeod’s appeal saying McLeod was working the ground and intended to renew the claim in 1917, and that the renewal grant should be issued in his favour.2)

In March 1920, McLeod registered as a returned soldier looking for employment.3)
