George McLachlan (1878 – 1948)
George McLachlan was born in West Bay, Nova Scotia. He worked for the government telegraph service in Vancouver for several years and came north in 1899 when the telegraph service was extended into the Yukon. He was first stationed as an operator at Big Salmon and he remained with the government for twenty-five years. He left in 1925 to work for White Pass and Yukon Route in Whitehorse and remained with them until 1946 when ill health forced his retirement. He was a student of world affairs and well-read in various fields and for many years was the local representative for United Press.1)
