Stephen Joseph McNeil (1871 – 1918)

Stephen Joseph McNeil was born in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. He was a miner near Dawson before he enlisted to serve in the First World War in 1916.¹⁾ He was recruited by Captain George Black and was in England in August 1917.²⁾ He went overseas with the 231st Battalion and transferred to the 2nd Canadian Motor Machine Gun Brigade. He fought with his unit in France and Belgium. He was killed on the first day of the attack on the Hindenburg Line, during the assault of Vis-en-Artois. He was awarded the British War Medal and the Allied Victory Medal. He is buried in Tilloy British Cemetery in Pas de Calais, France.³⁾
