Andrew Nerland (1870 - 1956)
Andrew Nerland was born in Norway and immigrated to Minneapolis in 1885. He moved to Seattle in 1889 and studied the painting and wallpapering trades. He married Annie Paulson in Seattle in 1899 and they had a son Arthur Leslie. Nerland established a paint and wallpaper business in Dawson in 1898 and in Fairbanks in 1904 with branches in Nenana, Iditarod, and Anchorage. He gradually moved into the furniture business. Nerland was a Fairbanks city councilman in 1914 and was elected mayor in 1915.
Arthur Nerland was born in Dawson in 1902 and attended school in Seattle. He became a partner in his father's furniture business in Fairbanks in 1930, was a city councilman from 1932-38, and the mayor from 1938-40.1)
