Edith Radford Neile
Edith Radford Neile, professionally known as The Oregon Mare, probably came from Oregon. After working in Skagway, she moved into the Dawson area. She was a handsome woman who turned men's heads as she walked by. She made men stand aside as she passed, or she just shoved them off the boardwalk. She was generous and would stand the bar a drink if she was flush. Jeremiah Lynch recalled seeing her spend a thousand dollars in an hour playing roulette. She often wore a nugget chain given to her by an admirer. It was said she had $50,000 set aside to pay her mother's mortgage. She was a dancer and, and as a novelty, would whistle and squeal just like a horse when she danced.1)
