Grafton Njootli (1947 – 1999)
Grafton Njootli was the MLA representing Old Crow for the Yukon Progressive Conservative Party from 1978 to 1982. He was the first Indigenous person elected to the Yukon legislature and was Minister of Health and Human Resources in Chris Pearson’s government.1)
Njootli resigned from the chamber in 1979 while the RCMP investigated him for forgery and assault. He was re-elected in the next election.2) He was appointed Deputy Speaker of the House in October 1980 and served until the legislature dissolved in 1982.3) He was forced to resign again when he breached his probation.4)
Grafton Njootli died in a boating accident on the Porcupine River in 1999.5)
