Nels Christian Nielsen (1876 – 1955)

Nels Nielsen was born in Stavenger, Norway. He travelled up the Stikine River in 1897 with McKenzie and Mann. They were going to work on a railway from Telegraph Creek to Dawson, but the Canadian parliament failed to ratify a previous agreement and Nielsen’s job evaporated. He went to Skagway and started working for White Pass in the spring of 1898. After a while, he moved to the Champagne and Dalton Post areas where he trapped, married, and raised a large family. In 1912/13, he and Fred Langholz formed a freighting company and carried supplies to the Chisana goldfields in Alaska.1)
