Jack Patterson

Jack Patterson made his first trip into the Yukon in 1886. Before that he was employed by the Black Diamond Coal Mines near Seattle. He was a miner from boyhood and always on the frontier. He was an old-timer in Colorado. For a number of years, he and J. Weir conducted the New England [pub?] in Seattle.1) In September 1898, Patterson fixed his Dawson New England saloon winter quarters by putting in double floors with sawdust in between, the walls the same and a foot of sawdust over the ceiling.2) In October 1898, Patterson had been sick in bed for many months and was only up a few days when fire struck his property and the New England also, with a loss of $7,000. Mr. Patterson was a member of the Odd Fellows and a Knight of Pythiss. It was hoped his many friends would help him as he helped when fire struck Seattle, Spokane, and Ellensburg.3)
