Bill Stewart

Bill Stewart was an old Caribou miner originally from near Goderich, Ontario. He travelled over the Chilkoot Pass just after John Lind in 1894, but Stewart got caught in a blizzard. He just had time to put down his pack and to throw a small tarpaulin over himself, and then he was stuck there for nine days. He ate raw oatmeal and some tallow candles. Both feet were badly frozen. Lind worked for Bob Matheson and Stewart at Franklin Gulch on the Fortymile River.1)
