“Dutch” Marie Schmidt (d. 1912)
Marie was a successful prostitute in Dawson who formed a relationship with “Fiddler” John Holmberg. Holmberg travelled through Alaska and the Yukon and finally struck it rich on the upper Hammond River in the Koyukuk country. Schmidt was wealthy in her own right. In 1912, they decided to leave the north declaring their intention to marry in Seattle. They and a travelling companion, Frank “Tamarack” Adams, were presumed murdered by Thomas “Blueberry Kid” Johnson, a man whose boat they had leased.1)
