Ernie Somerton

Ernie Somerton and Henry Breaden were stagecoach drivers on the Overland Trail from 1923 to 1928. Greenfield and Pickering had the mail contract during those years and 2 ton “Holt” cats and Model “T” Ford trucks were used on the route. After the river boats were wintered, they used Model “Ts” between rivers and canoes to cross the rivers. When there was sufficient ice on the rivers, they started using the cats. Ed Kimbel had a two-ton cat that he used for many years. When the mail contract was lost to T. C. Richards, T. C. started using snowmobiles on the overland, and later in the mid-30s brought in the first RD6 Caterpillar diesel.1)
