Eugene E. Swanson (1864 – 1943)

Eugene Swanson enlisted in the United States Army and was assigned to the 24th Infantry Company L, known as the Buffalo Soldiers, a famous regiment of black soldiers. He arrived in Wrangell in May 1899, enroute to his duty station at Skagway. He was discharged at Skagway with the rank of Corporal in April 1902. He went on to the Klondike and worked as a teamster in Dawson for a couple of years and then tried Nome before settling at Rampart, Alaska in 1904. He mined on Hunter Creek in the 1920s and 1930s and became known as the most successful miner in the region.1)
