Harry Stallworthy

Harry Stallworthy was a Royal North-West Mounted Police officer in Dawson when, in the spring of 1918, the Canadian government decided to send a police cavalry detachment to fight in the First World War with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. Stallworthy travelled to Regina and in May 1918 applied to join the detachment. He was accepted and was immediately shipped to England for a brief training session at Shorncliffe Barracks. In July, the detachment crossed into France with their mounts and became involved in pushing the Germans back from Arras to Cambrai, and then across Belgium. He was at Mons at the time of the Armistice, and then the detachment moved on to Namur where they were stationed for Christmas. They returned to Britain in January 1919 and from there returned to Canada. Stallworthy was assigned to Vancouver but applied to return to the Yukon. In August, he was posted to B Division and put in charge of the detachment at Carmacks.1)
