Joel R. “Joe” Sunderland

Joe Sunderland worked in the kitchen at Wernecke and prospected on the side. He staked the Union and the Maiden's Hope claims on Keno Hill in 1919 and he and his partner staked the Friendship claim in 1920. He staked the Bluestone and others and traded Roaul Binet the Friendship claim for the recording fee. The Friendship turned out to be an extremely rich claim. He sold the Bluestone to Treadwell Yukon and travelled to Seattle and San Francisco where he spent his money. He eventually returned to work in the kitchen at Wernecke Camp.1)
