Margaret Clark “Peggy” Shand (1851 - 1943)

Peggy Shand was born in Scotland and attended Lady Erskine’s School. When the family moved to Glasgow, she apprenticed to become a dress and bonnet maker before she persuaded her mother to let her work in an office. Peggy’s cousin David was a childhood friend and she agreed to marry him and travel to America. They were married in Chicago in July 1889 and lived in California for a few years. Hearing about the Klondike strike they set put for the Yukon in 1897.1)

Peggy and David Shand worked for a few months setting up a mill at the mouth of the White River and they decided to stay in the area and build a roadhouse. They bought the Johnson Roadhouse on Stewart Island in 1900 and operated it for over thirty years.2) The Shand Roadhouse at the mouth of the Stewart River was destroyed by fire at the beginning of January 1920 or the end of December 1919.3)
