Jim Vittrekwa (b. 1924)
Jim Vittrekwa was born at Rock River, Yukon to parents Sarah Snowshoe and George Vittrekwa. Jim was raised mostly in the Delta around the middle Peel River. He was sent to the Hay River mission school for three years at age four in 1928. Jim and his family lived on the land and only came to Fort McPherson for Christmas and Easter. In the winter they travelled through the Rock River, Caribou Mountain and the Blackstone River areas following the caribou and trapping muskrats. Their spring camp was on the middle Peel where they went to hunt muskrats. After that season was finished in June, family members would gather at their fish camp at the mouth of the Peel for the summer and fall. Jim and Ellen Wilson were married in Fort McPherson by the Anglican minister, and they raised seven children.1)
