Mary Vittrekwa (1907 - 1996)
Mary Vittrekwa, Joe Henry, and Joe Martin were adopted by a family and raised together. Mary Vittrekwa always talked about Blackstone which she remembered from her youth.1) She married and moved to Fort McPherson in 1936.2) She did not return to the country she grew up in until the Dempster Highway was built. Then she came back at every opportunity, reconnecting with family and friends.3) When she died, she had 186 living relatives. She used the traditional ways of life and worked with vadzii (caribou). The Boy who went to the Moon was based on her stories and performed at the Yukon Arts Centre in 1999.4)
