Monique Wattereus (b. 1961)
Monique Wattereus was born in Whitehorse. She began skiing in the TEST program at the age of nine and in 1976 began winning national and international competitions. She won ten Canadian championship medals including six golds at the Canadian Juniors. She represented Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1979 and 1980, placing 15th with the third best Canadian result to that date. She won the 1981 year-long Nor-Am race series, the Sapporo, and the Japan International Ski Marathon. She raced in many World Cup races in Italy, former East and West Germany, France, and Canada.1)
Monique was named Yukon Female Athlete of the Year in 1977, 1978, 1980 and 1982 and received the Commissioners Award in 1982. She was inducted into the Sport Yukon Hall of Fame in 1991.2)
