Monina Wittfoth (1954 – 2023)

Monina Wittfoth was the daughter of Margaret and Hans Wittfoth. She spent her youth in Kenora and then Toronto, Ontario before moving to the Yukon at age 18. She co-founded the Dawson City Music Festival with John Steins in 1979, and it grew to be a legend among Canadian independent music festivals. Monina left Dawson periodically to pursue her education and finished her Ph.D in rhetoric from the University of British Columbia in 2006. Monina ended her varied career by working for the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in government doing work that she saw as genuine reconciliation and important in redefining the Yukon. She is remembered for her gatherings where food, drink, and stimulating conversations were plentiful.1)
