White

Mr. White was the mining recorder at Forty Mile in 1901 during the May flood. He cut a hole in the roof of his cabin in order to secure valuable papers and records. He spent hours rescuing people during the flood and he and Mr. Smith came to the rescue of Mrs. E. T. Smith in a large Peterborough canoe. Mrs. E. T. Smith was the “genial” hostess of the Miner's Home restaurant. She was obliged to climb on top of the signboard over her boarding house until she was rescued. The water that year reached seven feet above the normal spring flood highwater mark.1)
